Creative Value Chains: Rethinking Copyright for Fair Sharing in the Digital Economy

Creative industries today are largely dominated by digital platforms, while the value they generate remains very unevenly distributed. From music to video games to the visual arts, creators often struggle to benefit fairly from the revenue generated by their works. Recent debates over artist compensation on streaming platforms, or over the use of copyrighted works to train artificial intelligence systems, illustrate the scale of these imbalances. This situation poses a risk to human creativity and cultural diversity.

In this book, Yaniv Benhamou analyzes the limitations of current value-sharing models and highlights the inequalities inherent in copyright systems. Focusing on the often-invisible contributors to creation, he argues for a rethinking of copyright grounded in the principles of distributive justice. His goal: to ensure fairer compensation for all actors across the creative chain, from authors and artists to behind-the-scenes workers, not forgetting internet users, the true laborers of the digital economy.

Yaniv Benhamou is a professor of copyright and information law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva, director of the Digital Law Center (DLC), where he has devoted himself to the creative industries for twenty years, as well as a lawyer and semi-professional musician. This book is thus the fruit of twenty years of academic research and artistic practice.
