Description:

The Constitutional Court of South Africa declared parts of the Copyright Act of that country unconstitutional and discriminatory because they failed to provide for people with visual and print disabilities.  Come and learn about the meaning of the decision in light of constitutional law and of the Marrakesh Treaty, the first international instrument to deal only with a category of copyright exceptions, i.e., those for the blind and visually impaired, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.  Our panelists, a South African copyright expert and a stakeholder who was actively involved in the Canadian implementation of the treaty in 2016, will examine the situation under the guidance of a Canadian international law specialist.

Speaker:

  • Mrs Diane Bergeron, Canadian National Institute for the Blind
  • Prof. Coenraad Visser, University of South Africa

Moderator:

  • Prof. Miriam Cohen, Université de Montréal
